Why Do Website Visitors Opt-In?

Have you ever just sat down and thought about why a website visitor ever opts in to a mailing list? People tend to dislike advertising and the only thing they dislike more fervently than advertising is junk email. So why would they ever willingly give their name and email address to a website? That is a very good question…

The best way to answer the question is to ask another one. This one you should ask yourself. What makes you willingly give your name and email address to a website? The answers that you come up with for that question are the answers to how to get your website visitors to opt-in to your mailing list.

One obvious reason that people give their names and email addresses (along with a lot of other information) to a website is if they are making a purchase. Those are paying customers....the ones that are the hardest to come by in the Internet marketing world and the ones that you certainly want to keep happy and therefore willing to buy from you again.

Getting people to give up their names and email addresses when they are not making a purchase is a little trickier. People are skittish about typing in that information and they aren’t easily convinced to do so. You are one of those people, right?

So what is it that would entice you to do just that? Would a free e-book on the topic you are interested in do it for you or how about an in-depth free report on the subject? Maybe a temporary membership to a membership site related to the topic would inspire you to type in your name and email address. How about tutorial videos or audios you could listen to at home, in the car, or anywhere else? Especially, what would get you to opt-in EVERY time?

Ask yourself what would entice you to give your name and email address and give your potential customers that very thing – it’s the surest way to build a solid list of people who can relate to your topic and your mailings.
